What if I told you that tens of thousands of Houston children would be fed complete and healthy meals in the next year thanks to one golf tournament? Well guess what? It’s happening next week. The 15th Annual Jacob Green Celebrity Golf Classic is being held April 8th at Riverbend Country Club and proceeds will benefit Kids’ Meals. The Golf Classic will be preceded by a Gala Celebration at the Omni Houston Hotel on Sunday, April 7th and will feature silent and live auctions with some really cool items (a J.J. Watt autographed jersey, tickets to the 2013 Texas A&M vs. Alabama football game, tickets to Superbowl 2014, and a Houston Texans ticket package are just a few of the items being auctioned off). I am thrilled to be a part of this event so let me tell you all about it!

On Monday, April 8th, golfers will gather at Riverbend Country Club to raise money for Kids’ Meals. Participants will have the opportunity to play alongside sports celebrities including R.C. Slocum, Bubba Bean, Matt Musil, Calvin Murphy, Nat Moore and Ed “Too Tall” Jones. Something tells me these celebs be just as fierce with a golf club in their hand as they are on the field!

While we can all enjoy a good competition, it’s even better when the real winners are children in need. Every weekday in Houston, more than 1,700 children are fed by Kids’ Meals. This organization, led by Executive Director Ruth Burrell, is the only meals on wheels program for pre-school aged children living in poverty.

We often hear about low-income children receiving free meals in school. But what about the little ones who are too young for school? In most cases, they fall through the cracks and are forgotten. Kids’ Meals has made it their mission to “catch” these children in our community! Volunteers deliver nutritious meals straight to the doors of children in need, free of cost, every weekday, year round. As if that weren’t enough, this passionate staff of eleven (that relies on the generosity of thousands of caring volunteers) also provides bags of healthy groceries, sponsors holiday meals and special events, and offers resources to the families to help create a better future for themselves.

Since 2008, the number of children served by Kids’ Meals has increased by 20% each year. That is incredible progress and Burrell is quick to credit those in the community who give their time to help make sandwiches, build holiday and toiletry packages, accompany the kids on special outings like Rockets and Astros games, the Barnum and Bailey Circus, and The Children’s Museum.

“My passion is to end hunger among children in Houston. My goal is to have Houston be the first city to have no hungry children. We are constantly giving out information to other cities in hopes that their city will follow suit to end hunger in their area amongst the most innocent little ones. The money raised by the Jacob Green Celebrity Golf Classic will be a ‘hole in one’ for Kids’ Meals. It will ensure that these young children will never have to go to bed hungry again. We thank Jacob Green and his supporters for their generosity!”

Everyone involved in this event is excited about the impact it will have on hungry kids in our community. If you’d like to get involved with Kids’ Meals, either as a volunteer, to donate, or to get details on holding your own fundraiser, check out their website and contact them directly.
